A Birth Mother’s Guide to the Adoption Process

By Bonnie Wakefield

Are you based in Kansas and have an unplanned pregnancy? Are you considering placing your child up for adoption? Adoption Choices of Kansas is here to provide full-service adoption planning and assistance.

Now you might find yourself wondering, “Where do I even start? What exactly does the adoption process in Kansas involve?” These are natural questions that many birth mothers have when considering adoption. We’re here to provide a clear understanding of what to expect. Our adoption agency wants you to know that this is not something you go through alone. We walk you through every step whether you want to meet in person or virtually. Your comfort matters to us and we want you to feel confident in every choice you make.

The Adoption Process

What is the adoption process? It’s an opportunity to receive support and guidance while choosing a home for your baby.

  1. Contact Adoption Choices of Kansas: We’re committed to helping you through this journey. You can call or text us. Our staff of professionals are waiting to help.
  2. One-on-One Meeting: We’d like to get to know you and understand your situation. You meet with a Birth Parent Counselor who will provide you with emotional support and more. This meeting can be anywhere that allows you to feel comfortable whether it’s in person or via video.
  3. Create Your Personalized Adoption Plan: Your Birth Parent Counselor will assist you with creating the adoption plan that meets your requirements. This plan includes making decisions regarding the adoption and a financial budget for your needs. It is carefully crafted by you and your Birth Parent Counselor.
  4. The Family Matching Process: Here is the moment you get to review adoptive families and make the final decision. You’re able to view family profiles that include important information about them. Once you’ve made the decision, you can then receive financial support (if needed).
  5. Birth of Baby: For this step, you’ll have a birth hospital plan created. This plan has information like whether you want to hold the baby after birth or not, and any other requirements you may have. Your Birth Parent Counselor will be there to ensure everything goes as planned. Then your baby will leave with the loving adoptive family you have chosen.
  6. Post-Placement Support: Counseling and emotional support is available as needed. We also continue to pay expenses 6 weeks after your delivery. If you agreed to communicate with the adoptive family, then you will receive pictures and letters from them.

Birth Mother Resources Available During and After

Adoption Choices of Kansas has plenty of resources available for birth mothers during and after this process.

  1. Financial Support: Having an unplanned pregnancy can be a huge financial strain. From having to buy maternity gear to buying nutritious groceries, you may need financial support.
