How to Make a Homeless Adoption Story Successful

When it comes to adoption, everyone has a unique story. We meet birth mothers and adoptive parents from all walks of life. From every background and culture. Yet, each and every person we work with is special and is treated with the utmost respect. Our doors are open no matter your situation, and we will help you every step of the way.

One type of adoption experience we’ve encountered is that of homeless birth mothers. This can occur due to personal circumstances and the inability to find the right assistance. Through our help, however, we can show you how to make a homeless adoption story successful. We’ve seen it happen many times. Read on to find the answer!

Receive Financial Assistance

An unplanned pregnancy can be scary. Adding homelessness on top of that can make for an overwhelming situation. But don’t worry. Adoption Choices of Kansas can provide you with financial support and proper nutrition, including but not limited to: food stamps, WIC and other grocery expenses. If you are in need of temporary housing, we can arrange a safe and healthy place for you to stay during your pregnancy. Our agency can also help you apply for Medicaid and receive appropriate medical care.

We are here to help in whatever way we can to ensure that both you and your baby stay safe and healthy throughout your adoption journey.

Speak with a Counselor

Making the decision to place your baby for adoption is not easy. If you need help processing your thoughts, feelings and options our adoption counselors are here for you. They can give a confidential and safe place to ask questions, voice concerns or express your emotions. This is a great opportunity for you to deal with anything and everything you’re experiencing due to your unplanned pregnancy, and help you healthfully grieve your decision and move forward in your life.

If you are struggling with an addiction of any kind, and want help, our counselors can be there for you and give you resources to get the appropriate assistance that you need. They can provide you with the numbers or information for local addiction centers in the surrounding Wichita area, or give you directions to the nearest in-patient care facility.

Choose an Adoptive Family

The next step in your homeless adoption story is choosing an adoptive family for your baby. Think about what kind of life you’d like him or her to have. Do you want them to be raised in a city or small town? Do you have a religious preference? Would you like them to have siblings or pets? Write down any and all ideas you have and discuss your options with your caseworker. No adoptive family is perfect, so your caseworker may ask you which factors are the most important. They will also discuss the three levels of openness in adoption — open, semi-open and closed — and what types of adoption there are. For instance, single parents, LGBT, transracial, etc.

After you’ve narrowed down your options, your caseworker will present you with prospective adoptive parent profile books. These will have photos, bios and information on each potential match. Because this is a big decision, you do not need to rush to choose a match. You will have to review all the information and see who you feel would be the best fit.

Can You Have a Successful Homeless Adoption Story?

Absolutely! Placing your baby for adoption through our agency comes at no cost to you, and we can provide you with the basic necessities — food, shelter and financial assistance — to help ease your stress and discomfort throughout your unplanned pregnancy. We promise that both you and your baby will be kept as safe and healthy as possible, and that you will receive the best care we can provide! We will walk with you every step of the way as you choose your child’s adoptive family and get back on your feet.

We would never place your baby with a family who would cause either of you harm. Each and every prospective adoptive parent is carefully screened, and we ensure that they are growing their family through adoption for the right reasons. If you are homeless and want to place your baby for adoption, we are here for you! Don’t hesitate to reach out with any and all questions and concerns. We look forward to hearing from you!
