What Happens at the Hospital if I’m Giving my Baby Up for Adoption in Kansas?

By Chloe Agas

“I am considering adoption for my baby, but I’m anxious and curious about what will happen at the hospital.” As a birth mother, you may have questions such as:

  • What can I do to be prepared?
  • How will I be treated at the hospital?
  • What will make me comfortable when giving birth to the child?
  • What can I expect after the child is born?

This can be overwhelming, and it is ok to worry about what the next steps will be. As a mother who is interested in giving a child up for adoption, please know that you are not alone and that support is available to help you during this time. Our professionals at Adoption Choices of Kansas are prepared to assist you and answer your pondering questions as you go onwards through the adoption process.

What is a Hospital Plan?

A birth plan can also be known as a hospital plan and it is essentially based on your preferences before, during, and after labor. Along with the creation of your adoption plan, this will be prepared before you give birth. When you create a Hospital Plan, you address and answer questions such as:

  • Which hospital do I plan to go to?
  • How do I want to deliver the baby?
  • Who will be in the delivery room when I am giving birth?
  • Who do you want holding your baby?
  • What resources would be provided/available to me?
  • What will make you comfortable during your stay at the hospital?

This can be as detailed as possible in order to accommodate the birth mother’s needs on delivery day. At Adoption Choices of Kansas, our mission is to put our clients best interests at heart and to provide support throughout this time.

What will Happen at the Hospital if I’m Placing My Baby for Adoption?

When you create your hospital plan, you choose what kind of interactions you want during your stay. The hospital will accommodate your wants and needs according to your birth plan to ensure a safe and comfortable delivery. Some hospitals will allow the birth mother to stay from 24-48 hours after giving birth.

Every decision is completely up to you in your hospital plan. We advocate your preferences to ensure a comfortable atmosphere when you receive treatment. At the hospital, you will be able to have the adoptive family present on your delivery date depending on where your preferences lie. Each interaction will also depend on how much contact you want with the adoptive family and baby as well. This includes who will be cutting the cord, and holding the baby. Bonding time will also be considered according to your comfort level. This can be divided between the birth mother and the adoptive family at the hospital, or demonstrated on one side only. You have the right to choose what option would be the best for you.

When you create an individualized birth plan, you will have options for your unique circumstances. Our agencies will work with you to create a plan that is safe and comfortable according to your decisions. Your experience at the hospital will go according to the plan that is created and your birth parent counselor will be present to advocate for you.

What happens after Birth with an Adoption?

Once you give birth to your child, the final step of the adoption process begins between you and the adoptive family. Your birth parent counselor will assist in overlooking the post-birth activities and your hospital plan. We will also make sure to check in with you about your adoption plan overall. At our agencies, we provide the resources to assist you and go through the options you have available to you. At the end of the day, we encourage the birth mother to choose what will be the best for them.

Birth certificates will be processed, and as a birth mother you will be listed on the original certificate with the name of your choice. Then a second one would be created once the adoptive family finalizes the adoption process. This process can occur in a variety of cases and scenarios depending on how both parties decide to name the child themselves.

You will also begin the process of moving forward through relinquishment papers. This gives permission to the adoptive family you have chosen to permanently adopt the child. Depending on your agreement, you and the adoptive family will have post-placement communication amongst each other.
